Virna

Virna

Virna is located just outside of the historic village of Barolo in the heart of Langhe, Piemonte.  The wines come from 20 acres of vineyards ideally located in the “crus” of Cannubi  Boschis, Preda, Sarmassa, I Merli, San Giovani and Costa delle rose.  The winery and vineyards are owned and run by the Borgogno family who has owned vineyards in the area since 1720.  The “Azienda Agricola” is now run by Virna Borgogno who is aided by her husband Gianni (though he mainly concentrates on their other property in Treiso who also produces a formidable Barbaresco).

The winery is a unique blend of tradition and technology.  Modern stainless steel tanks and production equipment, large and small French oak vats and temperature control round out her arsenal.  Virna is not afraid to take advantage of modern tools available to her and her seamless Barolo’s are testament to this commitment.  She uses the collective knowledge of generations passed down to her, as well as modern science and viticulture to create wonderful interpretations of the terroir.  While many Barolo producers still produce hugely tannic Nebbiolo’s  which are completely unapproachable for decades, Virna prefers “texture and intensity” over pure structure.  Her Cannubi Boschis and Preda/Sarmassa wines are simply breath taking and an example of why this DOCG has been called the “King of Wines”.
