Squawking Magpie

Squawking Magpie

Squawking Magpie is one of the original producers to plant in the famous Gimblett Gravels of Hawkes Bay.  The first one planted was in 1981 and is known as the Irongate vineyard.  Now there are a total of four vineyards in this prestigious area that produce fruit for this idiosyncratic winery.  The name of the winery comes from the warbling birds that are synonymous with the region.  (Although Gavin Yort [Owner] also admitted to a little poke at the U.S “Screaming Eagle” brand.)   This medium sized producer has had an enormously successful time on the international show circuit with too many accolades to mention.  There are a number of wines and ranges within the stables, but their focus is on Chardonnay, Bordeaux blends and Syrah.  The wines can be described as stylishly handled, intense, yet elegant.  I’m sure we will be seeing more of this brand in Canada soon.
