Ben and Gill Radford run this husband and wife operation high in the hills of Eden Valley.  At almost 500 metres above sea level it has temperatures ranging a full 3-5 degrees below that of the warmer Barossa Valley.  The vines date back to the 1930’s and the vineyards are run Biodynamically.  The Radfords’ approach the farm holistically, with sheep, ducks, geese and chickens providing the “resources” for their biodynamic preparations.  This likeable duo tackles the vines and wines together.  Gill comes from a chef background and Ben is a well recognized international winemaker.  They are very interested in the “sense of place” and are not afraid to do things the long way to reach their dreams.  This winery is fast growing a following and it is easy to see why.

This high altitude, old vine vineyard is run organically and shows great intensity and character. The low yielding vines were hand picked, whole bunch pressed, fermented in old French oak and aged on lees for 9 months. The winemaking approach was very “hands off” and the wine shows great expression of place. It shows aromas of lemons, flint, nectarine and sherbet.  The palate is beautifully textured, with higher acidity and showing citrus complexity. Will age well-0-10 years. A classy wine-95 points.

Eden Valley Shiraz 2006

The Shiraz is grown alongside the Riesling vineyard Biodynamically. The old, low yielding vines produce small berries of very intense spicey character.  This fruit was fermented in small open fermenters and aged for 30 months in old French oak barriques.  The aromas are those of black berries, white pepper, leather, black cherries and chalk. The palate is full bodied and extremely balanced, showing little oak evidence and a long dark berry finish.  Great potential, cellar 2-15 years.  94 points.
