Cantina De Nizza

Cantina De Nizza

Cantina di Nizza is located in the heart of Monferrato in Piemonte. There are a tremendous number of meso-climates and soils throughout the region and the range of grape varieties found here reflects this. However, it is arguably the Barbera grape (Barbera d’Asti) which truly shines in this diverse area. The winery itself can be found right in the historic town of Nizza Monferrato. It was established in 1955 when a group of like minded grape growers and land holders got together to share a common goal of making the best wines to represent the area. Now the facility is a modern winemaking showpiece, combining technology and tradition to produce some truly remarkable wines. The strength of the winery lies in the access to old vineyards, in ideal locations with committed growers who have a steak in the business. The old vine Barbera, Cortese, Moscato, Grignolino and Brachetto’s are examples of the potential of these relatively unknown Italian varietals. Cantina di Nizza also experiments with “modern French varieties” with great success (their Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay goes into an impressive blend with local varietal Cortese). The Cantina provides an interesting insight into the diversity, history and traditions that reflect the unique Piemontese culture, and why their wines are so popular.
