Chateau Canet is a beautifully manicured vineyard estate, with buildings looking like something from a Bordeaux postcard. The property is run by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Floris and Victoria Lemstra-Bake. They met while living and working in Burgundy (Floris worked as a wine negotiant while Victoria was in tourism). In 2006 they decided to forego the life of Bourgogne and start a new adventure making wine in Minervois. The magnificent estate is over 250 acres in size with over 100 acres dedicated to vineyards. They also rent cottages and host cooking retreats on the estate. The winery is modern and well designed with particular emphasis placed on high quality oak barriques. They grow a range of varietals including Syrah (over half), Merlot, Grenache, Chardonnay, Marsanne, and Bourboulenc. The best wine from the estate is arguably the “Les Evangiles” Syrah. This wine is made from grapes grown in an old single vineyard parcel at the highest point on the Domaine. The yields are extremely low (around 1.5 tons per acre) and the wine is aged in new, first fill and second fill French oak barriques from Burgundy cooperages. All the vineyards are run under the “Terra Vitis” sustainable vineyard guidelines. Chateau Canet is a testament to this couples’ vision and dedication to a dream.
