Zorgvliet

Zorgvliet

The historic Zorgvliet property dates back to 1692 and is located just outside of Stellenbosch in the Banhoek valley at the base of Simonsberg mountain.  The impressive vineyards and winery are also complemented by the heritage manor “Herenhuis” which has been fully restored to a restaurant and spa.  The property also operates a five star hotel, conference facilities and a café…truly the one stop shop.  Zorgvliet winery has been owned by entrepreneur Mac van der Merwe since 2002.  This family estate is part of a larger business portfolio which includes high end hotels, a private game park, restaurants and even a golf course.

The cellar door and conference/wedding facilities occupy the main buildings as you come into the property.  The modern architecture and spectacular views make for a wonderful tasting experience.  The friendly and knowledgeable staff are definitely an asset to this estate.  The winery itself is located in a separate building at the base of the vineyards 200 metres from the tasting bar.

The wines are made in a new winery built in 2004.  This modern facility allows up to 500 tonnes of grapes to be processed during the vintage.  Grapes for the portfolio are sourced from the extensive vineyards surrounding the facility.  These beautiful hillside vineyards were mostly planted seven years ago and are now coming into full maturity.  A large number of different varieties are grown including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Viognier, Semillon, Cabernet Franc, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot and Malbec.  These grapes are produced in 3 levels of styles including straight varietals and blends.

Winemaking is headed up by Stephan van der Merwe.  Despite the relative youth of the wine label, accolades have piled in.  Zorgvliet is gaining a fine reputation for Sauvignon Blanc and their Cabernet blends.  However, their Petit Verdot and Viognier are extremely good considering the scarcity of these varietals.
